Wild Trout are my favorites, creek born just seems to create colors that only God can make.
A typical day of my youth would be, come home from school, drop my books on the nearest chair, go to the kitchen, eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, drink a glass of milk, go to the back porch, grab my fishing rod, call Shag and Clinker( my dogs) and head for the creek. And — be home at supper time !
Pretty much spoiled by Mom and Dad, but they always knew where I was and knew I wouldn’t get into too much trouble there. They didn’t know, nor did I, that this would lead to the love of creating ” The Artistry of Trout”.
Just thinking back to the couple of years I lived in Welches, Oregon just downstream from Mt. Hood. These are the four species I enjoyed catching while I was there. The Red Band from the Dechutes, Steelhead from the Sandy, and the little Brookies from a feeder stream of the Clackamus, and the Dolly Varden from a little mountain pond. I also caught a few Cutthroat from below the dam on Lake Timothy.
I love creating Brown works because I’ve always had a hard time catching them ! I did catch this one though in my studio , where I do all my fishing these days. I’m usually pretty lucky there.
I found this root while walking around my property with my neighbors 3 dogs, they’ve learned the routine and are usually waiting at the door when I go out.
Stylized works always surprise me , I never know what they want to be, but, they do! I REALLY LIKE THAT!
While walking around my property I come across these knocked down Cedar roots and they seem to speak to me, when I listen, GOOD THINGS HAPPEN.
One of my best customers called asking if I could do a Tiger Trout. His wife had recently caught one and he wanted to surprise her with one of my creations. I told him I’d never done one , but I’d try. He sent me the fly she caught it with and I made a wall presentation for her, with the Trout approaching the snagged fly. It turned out good so I made this one for me.
Over the last 18 years I’ve probably done less than five of these presentations , TROPHIES, no, but the folks that own them now might just call them TREASURES .
This beautiful work will be and is now ” AN AMERICAN CLASSIC” .I was quite surprised to be asked to contribute my story to this great effort. I’m not known as a fly tyer or recognized fisherman, so, I asked Why he waned me to participate? He said ” your Artistry is recognized throughout the fly fishing world and we’re encluding other artist as well.” I was and I am honored. Jim Wiley.
LOVE BROOKIES ! Over the years I’ve created more of these beautiful Trout than any other. Other folks must like um too since they usually don’t hang around long in my GALLERY .
